Chaga Gadi Ngee post harvest festival celebrated by Liangmai Community

The Chaga Gadi Ngee post-harvest festival of the Liangmai Nagas was celebrated in Dimapur by the Liangmai community at Orchid Ground UNB, Naga colony, Burma Camp with much fervor, where Liangmei cultural items were presented by different groups. It was also mainly celebrated in New Jalukie district of Phek where a large section of the Liangmai community resides.

A press release from the Liangmai Union Burma Camp, Dimapur stated that Rev Joshua Wijonamai, founder and director of Grace Mission International National Overseer was the chief guest of the programme.

During his speech, Rev Joshua stressed the importance of unity among the people and also on the importance of preserving and promoting one’s culture and tradition.

Also speaking at the function as the Guest of Honor, Witoubou Newmai, Editor of Newmai News Network, mentioned the reasons for celebrating the Chaga Gadi Ngee. He also explained how the identity consciousness of the smaller communities has been sharpened due to the changing social dynamics of the world. He urged the community to go deeper into the reasons of celebrations rather than just celebrate the festival for namesake.

Others who spoke at the event was the Liangmai elder, Arou Chawang who narrated in details the history of Chaga Gadi Ngee and how it came to be while another elder, Widinbo Chawang shared his thoughts on the event.

The event witnessed a number of colorful cultural items which was presented by different groups. Artist Samuel Lotha and Abuiiu enthralled the gathering with songs, While Wisaisuiliu Chawang presented a Liangmai folk song.

A traditional fashion show was also presented by the children and a pork fat eating competition and cockfighting competition was also held at the end of the event as according to a press note by the Chaga Gadi Ngee celebration committee convenor, Liangkebo.
