The Northern Mariana Islands, officially the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI; Chamorro: Sankattan Siha Na Islas Mariånas; Carolinian: Commonwealth Téél Falúw kka Efáng llól Marianas), is an insular area and commonwealth of the United States consisting of 15 islands in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The CNMI includes all islands in the Mariana Archipelago except Guam which is the southernmost island of the chain and a separate U.S. territory.

The United States Department of the Interior cites a landmass of 183.5 square miles (475.26 km2). According to the 2010 United States Census, 53,883 people were living in the CNMI at that time. The vast majority of the population resides on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. The other islands of the Northern Marianas are sparsely inhabited; the most notable among these is Pagan, which for various reasons over the centuries has experienced major population flux, but formerly had residents numbering in the thousands.

The administrative center is Capitol Hill, a village in northwestern Saipan. However, most publications consider Saipan to be the capital because the island is governed as a single municipality.

THE Saipan mayor’s office has extended the bidding for a cockfight operation, special assistant to the mayor Henry Hofschneider said.

The new deadline for submission of bids will be June 2, Friday, at 4:30 p.m. in the mayor’s office at Ladera Center in Oleai, he said. The bids will opened on June 7 at 10 a.m. in the mayor’s office.

So far, only one person picked up a bid application since they began advertising the bidding four weeks ago, he added. But no one submitted a bid application by the original deadline, May 26, he added.

The minimum bid requirement is $20,000 a year for a five-year license.

Cockfight operator Ray Roberto’s license will expire on June 30, 2017, he said.

Roberto formerly operated cockfight activities in the Gualo Rai arena before the facility was destroyed by Typhood Soudelor in Aug. 2015.
